The topics included herein, Ratio, Proportion and Percentages as well, are concerned with dividing something into parts. For example, if there are 200 people living in a small village, and 50 of these are children, this could be expressed as a percentage:
Example:
25% of the population are children; --- this means 25 are children out of 100 people!
or as a ratio: 25/100 or 1/4
>>> one in every four people is a child or there is 1 child for every three adults;
or a proportion:
>>> the proportion of children in the population is a quarter or one-fourth.

What do ratios do?
Ratios can be used in everyday life like if you were making pancakes and you had to use 3 cups of flour and 2 cups of milk, then you could say that the ratio of flour to milk is 3:2. And there are other examples but this should help.
example:
You might observe that 12 ounce bottle of shampoo lastat least 16 weeks. How long would a 18 ounce bottle last?
Solution:
Set the problem up like this: 12/16=18/n , where n is the # of weeks it will last.
Then cross-multiply to get 18X16=12n. That turns out to be 288=12n.
Divide both sides by 12 to get 24=n. Your answer is 24 weeks. Hope that helps!
So, it is but wise to learn lessons on understanding & solving word problems about ratio and proportions. In solving, cross-multiplication for the algebraic equations is often necessary to find what is needed in the problem.
Suppose there are thirty-five people in a room, fifteen of whom are men, what is the ratio of women to men?
# of persons = 35
# of men = 15
# of women = 20 (known by 35-15)
Ratio is: 20:15 | 20/15 | 20 to 15
twenty is to fifteen: or (20/15) / (4/4) = 5/3
5 is to three
